🧩 How to Solve a Rubik’s Cube (Beginner Friendly)

🔄 Notations

These are the names of moves used in this guide:

Notations

Step 1: Make a White Cross (Half)

Start with the yellow center on top.

Step 1

We want to bring all white edge pieces (the ones with two colors) to the top face.

  • If the white piece is in the middle row → use F, R, or L to push it to the top.
  • If the spot on top is already white, turn the top with U to make space.
  • If the white piece is at the bottom, turn U then F to bring it up.

Step 1

Step 2: Finish the White Cross

Now, rotate the top layer until the white edge piece lines up with its correct center color (like red on red).

Once it matches, turn that face two times (F2) to move the white piece to the bottom.

Done

Do this for all four white edge pieces.

✅ Your white cross is done!

Step 3: Solve White Corners

Now we solve the rest of the white face.

  1. Flip the cube so white is at the bottom.
  2. Look for a corner piece with white on it (on the top layer).
  3. Rotate the top so it sits between the two matching center colors.
  4. Use the move: R → U → R’ → U’ again and again until that corner falls into place.
  5. Repeat this for all 4 corners.

Step 3

Step 4: Solve the Middle Layer

Now we fix the edges in the middle row.

  1. Find an edge on the top that doesn’t have yellow.
  2. Match the front color of that edge with the center of that face.
  3. Check if it needs to go left or right.
  • If it goes right:

    • Do: U → R → U’ → R’
    • Then: Turn cube left → L’ → U’ → L → U

Step 4

  • If it goes left:

    • Do: U’ → L’ → U → L
    • Then: Turn cube right → R → U → R’ → U’

Step 4

If there are no good edges on top, use one of the moves above to push a middle one up.

Step 4

Step 5: Make a Yellow Cross

Now look at the top yellow face.

Based on what you see:

  • If it’s a straight line: F → R → F’ Step 5
  • If it’s a corner shape (L): F → R2 → F’ Step 5
  • If there’s just the yellow center dot: First do the L shape move → then the line move Step 5

Now, rotate the cube so yellow is on top. Step 5

Step 6: Put Yellow Corners in the Right Spots

We don’t care about orientation yet—just make sure the yellow corners are in the correct places, matching the side colors.

  • If two corners are already in the right spot (next to each other), do: R3 → turn cube → L3 Step 6
  • If they’re diagonal: do that move twice Step 6

Step 7: Turn Yellow Corners

  1. Flip the cube so white is on top.
  2. Pick a corner that needs fixing.
  3. Do: R → U → R’ → U’ again and again until yellow faces down.
  4. Without turning the cube, move to the next corner and repeat.

Don’t worry if the white face gets scrambled—it’ll come back at the end.

Step 7

Step 8: Swap Yellow Edges

Final step: fix the last few edge pieces.

  1. Find a face that’s already correct and hold it in front.
  2. Do this move: R → L → R5 → L5
  3. If not solved yet, do it again.
